You may have heard that SF Bay is a great place to experience sailing. This is true! You may have also heard that it can get chilly out there. Also true! But by following three simple rules for sailing attire, just about anyone can sail comfortably all day, everywhere in the Bay.
The summer after eighth grade, Lee lived on a small lake in southern Indiana. As a born "outdoors person," the opportunity to sail the lake with two cute boys on their Hobie Cat was not one to be passed up.
Living in landlocked Idaho can't keep Modern Sailing member Andy Hoobing away from sailing. Nearly once a month, Andy, often with family, flies across at least three states to go sailing on San Francisco Bay... or farther.
Among Modern Sailing club members, William Le was our most frequent charterer of 2021. It's obvious from his course and charter history that he's fallen in love with sailing. You might be surprised to learn that William began sailing only last September 2020. He writes:

"Sailing is everything. Being on the water, the accomplishment of setting the sails well, the freedom of movement without an engine… everything about sailing is perfect," says Jen Philips, former student and member of Modern Sailing.

Since many, many years, I had the dream to sail underneath the Golden Gate bridge. On October 14th last year, my dream became true. Thanks to our dear friend Aaron Fritz who made it possible and organized this cruise for us. With this adventure I was able to achieve one more milestone on my sailing career.
Finally on the water, it was great! Full moon made the flows even stronger and it was like sailing in a washing machine.
I did my sailing education in the English Channel, where the situation with the wind and flows is comparable to the San Francisco Bay. So I felt pretty much "at home" being on the helm in the Bay.
I hope our skipper Stan Lander enjoyed this day cruise too. We, definitely did! It was an unforgettable experience for all of us.
A very big thank you to all of you who made it possible, that my dream became reality! Also thank you for the MSC flag I got at the end of the day. It found it's place in my study, where I can see it daily.
WE LOVED IT! The whole team was so honored and thankful. Thanks so much for all of your team's hard work and excellence in organizing our party. Of the 22 of us, only 4 had ever been sailing and not in the Bay. The guys had an incredible experience, the skippers were all really great, allowing each of us to be at the wheel. They were kind and empowering. Plus the weather and wind were perfect! It was definitely one of the top 3 experiences that we have shared as leaders in the past 5 + years. We couldn't have asked for a better day!
I started sailing at Modern at the end of 2021 and threw myself into it, spending as much time out on the water as I could. I came to Modern with some flat water dinghy sailing experience and it was quite a transition learning to sail bigger boats in much tougher conditions. There was a lot to learn, but the Modern instructors, Club Skippers and fellow Modern sailors made learning fun and rewarding. My Modern instructors were clearly very experienced sailors and sailing with them was inspiring! I want to thank the maintenance crew and office staff for their dedication and hard work - you are the folks who make things work! There is a lot more to learn and I look forward to sailing with Modern for years to come.
