US Coast Guard Courses for Captain's License

Get your Coast Guard Captain's License!

Save yourself months of preparation time by letting Modern Sailing School & Club lead you through the USCG Captain's licensing process. We are a Coast Guard-approved training facility, which means we can administer the licensing exam, saving you the hassle and red tape of dealing with a regional exam center.

This course is taught by Captain Bill Moreland. In 2006, Bill came to Modern Sailing to earn his U.S. Coast Guard OUPV License, followed by a 100-Ton Master’s License. In 2008, he decided to turn his passion for sailing into a new career – first as a captain on sailboats doing tours of the Bay and finally becoming an ASA Certified Sailing Instructor. Bill is now the Chief Operations Officer and School Director for Modern Sailing's two locations in Sausalito and Berkeley. An instructor at heart, he continues to enjoy helping students reach their sailing goals by regularly teaching ASA courses, ASA Instructor Qualification Clinics, and US Coast Guard Captains License Courses.

License Information and Requirements

OUPV License - The Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel (also known as the Six Pack License) course prepares you to meet the qualification requirements for a USCG OUPV License. The OUPV License allows you to take up to 6 passengers for hire on an uninspected vessel.

Masters' 50 or 100 Ton License - The 100 Ton Master's USCG License course prepares you to meet the qualification requirements for a US Coast Guard Masters License in near coastal waters. The Master's License is awarded in 3 different tonnage categories: 25, 50 and 100 tons. The 100 ton license will allow you to operate commercial inspected vessels.

Coast Guard License Requirements - After you take the course and sit the exam, you have one year to complete all your requirements - sea service and personal. Testimonials

  • Esther C

I took ASA 101 with them recently. They have the best customer service I've ever seen! I mistyped my address when I signed up online so didn't receive the textbook. I called and the lady immediately sent me another copy! Everyone at the club is super friendly.

  • John Clark

Every aspect of Modern Sailing - training, syllabus, course materials, quality of the boats, quality of the instructors, and the very friendly and helpful staff - exceeded my expectations. Modern Sailing has a first class sailing program in an environment with challenging winds and currents. I look forward to coming back to charter a boat and certainly plan to continue my sailing training.

  • John Kipping

The meeting room was quite adequate and the location most convenient, but the course outline and instruction were outstanding. Modern Sailing is fortunate to have such a well organized instructor in Mr. Stan Lander who teaches very well from a rich professional background. Mr. Lander was generous with his time and patiently in helping students who needed more attention or time in understanding various aspects of the curriculum.
