Spring Forward: SF Bay Sailing Season is Just Ahead

Sunset Bridge by Capt. Scott Paul & Berkeley Marina at Sunset by Jacqueline Brevik

March 3, 2026

There is a distinct shift on the San Francisco Bay this time of year, a signal of longer afternoons returning and the gorgeous sunset reaches that reward windswept sailors.

As we prepare for the clocks to "spring forward" on Sunday, March 8, Modern Sailing is ready to welcome this transition. Please note that our Regular Season policies and rates officially go into effect on Monday, March 9, 2026.

As we approach the Spring Equinox on March 20, we invite you to shake off the winter doldrums and prepare for the ultimate maritime celebration: Opening Day on the Bay on Sunday, April 26.

Seasonal Policy & Rate Updates

With the arrival of the Regular Season, we see a significant increase in bareboat demand. To ensure all members have equitable access to our fleet during this high-traffic period, the following updates apply to all reservations starting March 9:

Sunset Sails are Back: The lengthening days mean our Midweek Sunset Charters (Monday – Friday, 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM) return! These remain the second-most cost-effective way to get your mid-week saltwater fix. (Scroll down for the first - Club Sails).

Bareboat Charter Rate Adjustment: Starting March 9, we resume our Regular Season charter rates. Visit our Charter Fleet webpage for pricing details. Our multi-day charter discounts still apply, and you can reserve up to 3 bareboat charters in advance.

Cancellation Window: To accommodate the increased demand and facilitate better planning for all members, the cancellation notice period for bareboat charter reservations and Club Sails will extend from 24 hours to 72 hours. Cancellations made within this window will incur a fee of 50% of the charter rate.

Our Race Program has matured. To foster better team development, preparation, and tactical consistency, we have moved away from the old "drop-in" format. Our program now features a Race Team format. Race cancellation windows have been updated to follow the same cadence as our ASA courses.

The Heart of the Club: Social Club Sails

One of our favorite benefits of a Modern Sailing membership is access to our active social sailing calendar. Whether you’re looking for more experience, meet new sailing friends, or simply enjoy the view, our Club Sails are the perfect solution.

Member Perk: You may bring up to two non-member adults on any Club Sail. Your guests enjoy the same preferred member rate as you do!

From our popular "Prime Time" and Angel Island excursions to midweek Sunset Sails and our newly re-engaged Family Catamaran Sails, there is a session for every schedule at both our Sausalito and Berkeley locations. Explore the Full Club Sail Calendar & Webpage here.

A Note on Planning: The best way to ensure your spring season is a success is to book your Club Sails well in advance. Planning ahead isn't just logistical, it's a commitment to yourself. By putting these dates on your calendar now, you hold yourself accountable to that goal of getting out on the water, refreshing your spirit, and soaking in that incomparable "post-sail bliss."

Furthermore, early booking helps our Club Sail Skippers and fellow members plan their schedules. Please keep in mind that Club Sails require a minimum threshold of guests to cast off; by booking early, you help ensure these sails stay on the calendar for everyone to enjoy.

Your Season Starts Here

We look forward to seeing you on the docks as we "spring forward" into another spectacular season of San Francisco Bay sailing.

Thumbs up to (Club Skipper) Geoff (Love) and his wife Laura. I went on my first Club Sail on Sunday, January 18, 2026. They were terrific!

  • Emma & George Stubbs, Sausalito

We just took our ASA 106 at a school in Rhode Island as we prepare for 6 months of cruising in the Caribbean. The class was great, but more than anything it made us really appreciate the quality of teaching and rigor at Modern Sailing. Even though we were the newest to sailing, the group seemed to think that we had the best fundamentals. We felt very well prepared and we see why Modern Sailing has the reputation it does.

I've taken two classes at MSS&C and was very happy with the program. This is also a great club with lots of opportunities for camaraderie and practice on the water. The boats in the fleet are fantastic and kept in tip-top shape. I highly recommend for all sailors and would-be sailors!

  • Andrew Goble, San Francisco

It has been wonderful sailing with MSC over the years. Please extend my thanks to the owners, management, and staff for unrequited professionalism and high standards in a charter fleet. I have sailed with several in my years and none nearly hold a candle to the quality of business and staff at Modern Sailing.

I would like to compliment Stan Lander for his coaching, counseling and teaching Heavy Weather Offshore Sailing. Stan was very accommodating to all of the student's interests and shared his many years of insight on handling the boat in heavy seas. I would certainly recommend Stan and this course to sheltered waters sailors. My confidence in handling a boat of this size was certainly enhanced by the experience.
