Opening Day on the Bay 2026: Guide to the Launch of Sailing Season

Opening Day on the Bay is Sunday, April 26, 2026

March teases us with a taste of sailing season's imminent arrival. While a true salt might might have a sixth sense for Mother Nature's cues, the rest of us are counting down the calendar days. In San Francisco, that moment is marked by the iconic Opening Day on the Bay, a tradition as iconic as the Golden Gate Bridge itself. This comprehensive guide will chart your course through the day's events, from the Corinthian Yacht Club's 'Blessing of the Fleet' to the dazzling boat parade and Modern Sailing Club's post-parade Member Mixer celebration

What is "Opening Day on the Bay?"

Organized by the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association for 109 years, this annual celebration has marked the official kick-off of the Bay Area's sailing season. Remarkably, since PICYA took stewardship in 1917, this cherished tradition has only been interrupted by the necessities of World War II and the global pandemic of 2020, which highlights its enduring significance.

This year, on Sunday, April 26th, the annual maritime celebration's theme is "Myths and Legends" celebrating the folklore, mythology, and storytelling of maritime history. Take liberties to interpretate the theme and get creative. Some boats will don flags and streamers or join the parade not decorated. The official committee boat is celebrating 130 years of PICYA. Modern Sailing's Club Sail boats will be decorated with flags, and we encourage our charter members and skippers to unleash your creativity.

3 Ways To Participate:

1 - Opening Day Club Sails

Join the boat parade aboard one of our Club Sail vessels and embark on the "blessing of the fleet" in Racoon Strait, hosted by Corinthian Yacht Club. Whether you choose to embark on a Club Sail from Sausalito aboard Survivor, Beneteau 38' or from Berkeley on the 42' Bavaria, Moon Dance, you'll be surrounded by members embracing the spirit of the event. Skippered by one of our MSC Club Members, our social club sails are an excellent way to make new friends and practice sailing the San Francisco Bay. Sign up here.

2- Charter a Boat on Opening Day

Charter a boat from our fleet of sportboats, premium sportboats, cruising monohulls and catamarans at either MSC Berkeley or MSC Sausalito and showcase your skills and creativity to join the parade. Remember, decorating your charter to the theme could earn you prestigious COTY points and bragging rights for the season. (Remember to register your charter by April 22, 2026). If you are not a certified skipper, MSC Members can put out call on our distribution Crew List. Visit this page for information on joining the crewlist.

3 - Join our Opening Day Member Mixer| Clipper Yacht Harbor Preview

After the blessing of the fleet and the "Myths and Legends" parade, keep the celebration going on land! This year, we are hosting our Sausalito Member Mixer at our upcoming second location at Clipper Yacht Harbor.

While we prepare for a full opening in May, we invite you to this exclusive First Look at our new home port. Come walk the brand-new docks, explore the space, and toast to the 2026 season.

When: Sunday, April 26 | 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Where: 400 Harbor Drive, Suite D (Clipper Yacht Harbor)

What: Locally catered spread, fine wine, craft beer, and live music by DJ Seth Finkin.

Make sure to snap photos of your decorated skippers, crew and boats! Send them to angel@modernsailing.com to be featured on our social media channels and our website.

The class was terrific. I know you must get many compliments about your sailing instructors...But I must tell you that Robert is outstanding. Having taught SCUBA, I really appreciate the way he is so sensitive to all on board, dealing with each so well, knowing quickly their strengths and weaknesses making each feel special and cared for.

I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!

I love sailing in the San Francisco Bay and greatly appreciate everything that MSC has to offer, the classes, clinics, club sails, racing and charters. I enjoy our supportive sailing community and use every opportunity to spend time on the water. After obtaining the certifications from MSC I did my first charter in Croatia in 2022 with my family. It was amazing and we’re looking forward to returning soon!

The vessel was clean and in fine condition - very nice boat for training, well-equipped.

I would like to compliment Stan Lander for his coaching, counseling and teaching Heavy Weather Offshore Sailing. Stan was very accommodating to all of the student's interests and shared his many years of insight on handling the boat in heavy seas. I would certainly recommend Stan and this course to sheltered waters sailors. My confidence in handling a boat of this size was certainly enhanced by the experience.
