Heating Away From the Dock (Anchoring or Mooring)

The vessels listed as Diesel are equipped with forced-air heaters that can be used anywhere, including "on the hook" or at an Angel Island mooring ball.

Benefits: Diesel heaters provide a "dry" heat that is much more effective at removing dampness and condensation from the cabin than electric heaters.

Power Management: While they burn diesel for fuel, they require 12V DC battery power to run the fans. Monitor your battery levels closely.

Safety: Always ensure fresh air is circulating in the cabin while the heater is in use.

Heating at the Dock (Shore Power Only)

All MSC cruising yachts carry a portable 110V electric space heater for use when plugged into shore power. However, Liberty has a specific built-in system:

Liberty (Beneteau Oceanis 38.1): Features a Dometic electric heat pump. This system only functions when connected to shore power.

Controls: There are two thermostat control panels: one below the main electrical panel (Nav Station) and a second in the port aft cabin.

Requirement: Ensure the dedicated "Climate Control" AC breaker is On at the main panel.

⚠️ Critical Power Management Rule

All MSC cruising yachts carry a portable 110V electric space heater. These must ONLY be used when connected to shore power.

Even if a boat has an inverter, using an electric heater away from the dock is strictly prohibited. It will drain house batteries rapidly and can cause permanent damage to the electrical system.

Here are some snaps of Our Saturday, August 20, 2022 Modern Sailing Expedition with Captain Robert Bivin, who was outstanding. Please convey photos and thanks to him. He is an outstanding individual, leader and sailing instructor. His knowledge and experience made us all feel safe and our Farallones Day Trip educational and just amazing.

We just took our ASA 106 at a school in Rhode Island as we prepare for 6 months of cruising in the Caribbean. The class was great, but more than anything it made us really appreciate the quality of teaching and rigor at Modern Sailing. Even though we were the newest to sailing, the group seemed to think that we had the best fundamentals. We felt very well prepared and we see why Modern Sailing has the reputation it does.

I've taken two classes at MSS&C and was very happy with the program. This is also a great club with lots of opportunities for camaraderie and practice on the water. The boats in the fleet are fantastic and kept in tip-top shape. I highly recommend for all sailors and would-be sailors!

Every aspect of Modern Sailing - training, syllabus, course materials, quality of the boats, quality of the instructors, and the very friendly and helpful staff - exceeded my expectations. Modern Sailing has a first class sailing program in an environment with challenging winds and currents. I look forward to coming back to charter a boat and certainly plan to continue my sailing training.

I would definitely recommend Modern Sailing to anyone who is interested in learning to sail the right way.
