The journey of dedication, continuous learning, and finding the right support when the stakes are high is what it took to transform Modern Sailing member Jason Keel's sailing dream into his pursuit of freedom on the water. His recent bareboat charter in the British Virgin Islands offers a powerful glimpse into this very transformation. From brushing up on fundamental skills to mastering advanced maneuvers in challenging conditions, Jason's experience is a compelling reminder of the invaluable impact of specialized training and unwavering commitment to the craft.
"I started sailing in my late 20s with college friends," Jason told us. "It was just an amazing way to see the Caribbean and the Seychelles, unlike anything I'd imagined. That experience stuck with me, leading me to want to sail more and get the certifications so I could keep going and share it with others." That initial spark led him to earn his ASA 101 (Basic Keelboat Sailing), 103 (Basic Coastal Cruising), 104 (Bareboat Cruising), and 114 (Cruising Catamaran) certifications back in 2007.
Every sailor faces challenges. For Jason, it was finding enough time on the water. "Certifications are important, but actual time sailing is even more so," he noted. "Taking that 20-year break to focus on my career and family, that was tough. But once I got back, thanks to Modern Sailing and their instructors, I gained the experience I needed to overcome my biggest hurdle: the fear of skippering my first bareboat cruise. I’d always been crew before. With Modern Sailing's help, I faced that fear and successfully skippered a 42-foot catamaran in the BVI with a crew of four. It was an incredible experience for everyone, and easily my biggest sailing accomplishment so far."
Jason prepared by signing up for our Angel Island Mooring Clinic with expert Instructor Captain Andrea Geisinger. He credits this clinic with making all the difference. Heading into the BVIs, he wanted to ensure he was ready to moor their 42-foot catamaran confidently. Captain Andrea's instruction truly helped him build that crucial confidence. As a direct result, Jason was able to consistently and safely pick up moorings throughout their entire adventure. He distinctly remembers a proud moment after mooring at Saba Rock in challenging 26-knot winds, a testament to the practical skills gained. He expressed immense gratitude for his Modern Sailing membership and the access it provides to such invaluable clinics, knowing it directly contributed to his family's unforgettable bareboat experience.
What truly captivates Jason about sailing? It’s the profound sensory experience. "What I love most about sailing is the moment you turn off the engine and feel the wind pick up the boat, and the sound of the sea," he mused. "I enjoy the freedom and independence sailing offers and the ability to plan an adventure to almost anywhere in the world. Sailing provides an opportunity for experiences unlike any other." It's this unique blend of challenge, freedom, and connection to nature that defines the essence of sailing for many seasoned enthusiasts.
The expertise and unwavering accessibility from Modern Sailing Instructors has clearly played a pivotal role in Jason's resurgence as a sailor. "Modern Sailing has been integral in building my knowledge, experience, and most importantly, my confidence to sail," he affirmed. His gratitude extends to the instructors who guided him. "I specifically want to thank the Modern Sailing Instructors Carmen Maio, Andrea Geisinger, and Richard Jensen for all the clinics they have led and working with me as a student to get me where I am today! Their experience, know-how, and willingness to make themselves accessible even after the course to support my sailing success is so appreciated."
Looking ahead, Jason’s sailing dreams are expansive and adventurous. "Now that I have successfully skippered my first bareboat cruise in the BVIs, I definitely have the sailing bug!" he exclaimed. "I intend to take additional courses offered through Modern Sailing, specifically ASA 105 (Coastal Navigation), 106 (Advanced Coastal Cruising), and 108 (Offshore Passagemaking). From there, I plan to get myself prepared to sail the French Polynesian Islands and then return to the Seychelles. Can’t wait!" His ambitious plans speak to the boundless possibilities that open up once you achieve true confidence and competence on the water.
