After learning sailing fundamentals in ASA 101, Basic Keelboat Sailing, you're now ready to refine and expand your skills in preparation to charter and skipper 30' - 32' sailboats on your own. Our ASA 103, Basic Coastal Cruising course is taught aboard 30 to 32-foot sailboats with diesel inboard engines and wheel steering. With 25 knots of wind on a regular basis, strong currents, and heavy shipping traffic, San Francisco Bay offers one of the most challenging venues anywhere. At the end of this class, you'll have the experience and skills needed to enjoy sailing in a variety of conditions with confidence.
The ASA 103, Basic Coastal Cruising curriculum includes docking and maneuvering under power, heaving-to, crew overboard recovery, reefing (both underway and hove-to), correcting for weather helm, current and tide analysis, basic navigation, and chart work. Upon successful completion of the class, students are eligible to charter boats up to 32’ in length from our fleet.
