3 Reasons You'll Fall in Love with Fall Sailing on San Francisco Bay

We appreciate the intense winds of summer, but there's a refreshing change of pace that arrives with the Autumn Equinox. As the days shorten and the valley cools, the San Francisco Bay transforms into a sailor's paradise for those fair-weathered skippers and crew!

Here are 3 reasons we think you'll fall in love with fall sailing on San Francisco Bay.

1) Soak Up the Sunshine (Naturally)!

Lighter, warmer breezes let you sail comfortably in fewer layers of clothing. It's the ideal chance to enjoy the brilliant fall sunshine and get a natural dose of Vitamin D! (We recommend sunscreen, of course.)

2) Smoother Conditions Sooth Nervous Novices.

Intrigued of sailing but wary of summer's strong winds? Fall offers the most pleasant introduction to the sport. It's a fantastic time to get your friends and family "bitten by the sailing bug."

  • New to Sailing? Start with a 1-day Introductory Sail to see if you enjoy it. Aftwards, we'll email you a special discount code for $50 off ASA 101, Basic Keelboat Sailing.
  • Ready for Speed? Fall is a great time to try out our dynamic sportboats: J/24s, J/80, J/88, J/99 and J/105s!

3) Spice Up Your Skills: Upcoming One-Day Seasonal Sailing Clinics

These clinics were designed specifically to prepare you for enjoyable fall and winter sailing. Click on the name of the clinic to learn more.

Night Sailing Clinic - The days might be getting shorter, but your sails don't have to! Increase your confidence at the helm after dark. This clinic can also certify members (who did not take ASA 104 with us) to be underway after sunset.

Advanced Sail Trim Clinic - Prepare to make the most of late fall and winter's notoriously light winds by learning advanced sail trim techniques. This clinic will set you on course to master the art of sailing well in a wide range of conditions. With expert instruction and hands-on training, you'll learn to utilize the sheets, traveler, jib leads, halyards, cunningham, outhaul, vang, and backstay for optimal enjoyment and performance.

Heavy Weather Sailing Clinic - Get prepared for stormy conditions any time of year. You'll learn essential high-wind line handling, personal safety equipment, setting up storm sails, and and steering in large following seas. Be ready for mother nature's challenges.

Electronic Piloting and Radar Clinic - (Coming to our schedule in 2026). Upgrade your equipment knowledge and refine your navigation skills aboard one of our Platinum Fleet vessels. Receive hands-on training with modern GPS plotting, radar, collision avoidance systems, and distress signaling devices.

I took ASA 101 with them recently. They have the best customer service I've ever seen! I mistyped my address when I signed up online so didn't receive the textbook. I called and the lady immediately sent me another copy! Everyone at the club is super friendly.

The office staff was very accommodating in meeting my availability.

Captain Jeff Cathers is really cool. I had such a great time on the Farallones Day Trip. It was actually my very best day of 2020. Thank you so much for coordinating the trip.

The meeting room was quite adequate and the location most convenient, but the course outline and instruction were outstanding. Modern Sailing is fortunate to have such a well organized instructor in Mr. Stan Lander who teaches very well from a rich professional background. Mr. Lander was generous with his time and patiently in helping students who needed more attention or time in understanding various aspects of the curriculum.

  • Emma & George Stubbs, Sausalito

We just took our ASA 106 at a school in Rhode Island as we prepare for 6 months of cruising in the Caribbean. The class was great, but more than anything it made us really appreciate the quality of teaching and rigor at Modern Sailing. Even though we were the newest to sailing, the group seemed to think that we had the best fundamentals. We felt very well prepared and we see why Modern Sailing has the reputation it does.
