Mastering Cruising Asymmetrical Spinnaker

Make the most of light winds on downwind points of sail by learning to fly the asymmetrical spinnaker!

This clinic prepares the sailor to fly a Cruising Asymmetric Spinnaker (CAS) whenpassage-making with short-handed crew. The clinic participants will learn how to hoist, trim, and jibe this beautiful downwind auxiliary sail.  Special handling techniques and emergency procedures are also included.

Electronic Piloting and Radar Clinic

One Day, 9am - 3:30pm

While ASA courses prepare you for basic navigation, becoming proficient in the electronic navigation tools found on your boat allows you to plan your trip and chart your course with ease.

Taught aboard one of our gold or platinum fleet vessels, you will be guided through some of the most common electronic piloting systems found aboard 30-50 LOA sailing vessels, with the opportunity to test your skills in real-time on the bay.

Angel Island Mooring Clinic

Treat your friends and family to a premier bay adventure with a sail to Angel Island and an overnight stay moored at Ayala Cove -- but first, prepare yourself for the fore and aft mooring, shallow waters, and tidal currents that can make mooring at Ayala Cove a unique challenge.

Our Angel Island Mooring Clinic prepares you to successfully conduct a bow-and-stern mooring as required by the California State Park Angel Island Harbor Master. Additionally, you will become proficient at utilizing one or two buoys for overnight mooring situations in many worldwide cruising locations.

Mastering Sail Trim Clinic

One Day, 9am - 3:30pm

Learning how to control the shape of your sails can greatly enhance your sailing experience. Whether you are a racer looking to gain ground or a cruiser interested in maximizing your efficiency, this course is a must. After a short discussion about the theoretical components of sail trim, you will have a chance to get out on the water and learn how to fine tune the sails and reach your goals.

Light Wind Sailing Techniques Clinic

Students get ready for a Light Wind Sailing Clinic on San Francisco Bay.
One Day, 9am - 3:30pm

Sailing in light wind can be very pleasant and easy, but if you lack the necessary skills, it can be very frustrating and challenging. Gain the skills to be a confident light air sailor and continue sailing through those fair winter days when winds tend to be light. Topics covered include sail selection, control lines, halyard settings, and techniques for maximizing your boat's performance on all points of sail. This clinic will also include an introduction to sailing with an asymmetrical spinnaker.

Heavy Weather Sailing Clinic

Modern Sailing School and Club Members are dressed in full foul weather gear as they get their sailboat ready for the Heavy Weather Sailing Clinic on San Francisco Bay
One Day, 9am - 3:30pm

The more you sail in winter or make long passages, the more likely it becomes that you’ll eventually encounter foul weather. This one-day clinic will introduce you to heavy weather sailing equipment, preparation, and techniques. Taught aboard our Spencer 44 Coho II, your instructor will cover topics such as personal safety equipment, high wind line handling techniques, setting up storm sails and running rigging, types of drogues and sea anchors, and steering in large following seas.

ASA 118, Docking Endorsement

Modern Sailing offers the American Sailing Association's docking endorsement, ASA 118
One Day, 9am - 3:30pm

The winds and tidal currents of San Francisco Bay can be challenging to sailors not only when sailing out on the bay, but especially when maneuvering in and out of dock slips. Join us for this one-day clinic in which you will learn strategies and techniques to safely and efficiently dock an auxiliary-powered sailboat in a variety of conditions. You’ll increase your overall boat handling confidence by acquiring knowledge of basic auxiliary power theory, engine and steering controls, proper use of dock lines, crew communication, and safety.

Testimonials

  • Molie M

After complete two courses and having a variety of instructors, I can safely say, this is place to go if you want to learn to sail. The fleet is equally diverse and exciting. The office staff does a great job of getting you plugged into the sailing community. Fantastic group of folks!

  • John Kipping

The meeting room was quite adequate and the location most convenient, but the course outline and instruction were outstanding. Modern Sailing is fortunate to have such a well organized instructor in Mr. Stan Lander who teaches very well from a rich professional background. Mr. Lander was generous with his time and patiently in helping students who needed more attention or time in understanding various aspects of the curriculum.

  • Mike, Santa Rosa, California

All of the courses and my instructors (JT and Stan) were extremely professional and full of knowledge and experience. I found I was able to learn from their experiences beyond the scope of the courses, and look forward to future opportunities to do so. I would highly recommend Modern Sailing to anyone.
