Announcing Modern Sailing's New Club Skippers of 2026

Modern Sailing is proud to introduce our newest addition of Club Skippers to the team!

Club Skippers are experienced sailors and dedicated club members who lead our popular Club Sails, helping fellow members get out on the water, sharpen their skills, and connect with the broader Modern Sailing community. Formally trained through our Club Skipper Clinic, these volunteer leaders donate their time and expertise to foster a safe, supportive, and fun environment for sailors of all levels across San Francisco Bay.

Please join us in giving Pamela Perry, Allan Wilsker, and Terence Carey a warm welcome to our Club Skipper team!

Pamela Perry

"Ever since my first sailing class five years ago, I have loved skippering! I love assessing wind, currents, and sail trim, as well as introducing people to the SF Bay.

After my first class in October 2021, I wondered if starting at age 66 would hold me back. But despite a steep learning curve, neither my age nor body kept me from advancing. Since then, I’ve completed ASA 101–106 and 114, raced for two years on the Team Mymble J/99 (Level 3 Performance Race Team), and even skippered a 42’ catamaran in Sardinia and Corsica.

Modern Sailing has given me the confidence to handle any boat - from tiller-steered racers to large cruisers. As a Club Skipper, I’m excited to introduce more people to sailing and offer great practice opportunities to new sailors. Come join me on the Bay!"

Allan Wilsker

"I started sailing years ago on the East Coast and completed my formal training here in the Bay Area. Living close to our Sausalito locations allows me to get on the water frequently across a variety of boats and fleet configurations.

Skippering Club Sails lets me help other sailors gain proficiency and confidence in an informal setting. Every day on the water is a learning day, and seeing new sailors 'get it' when the wind and boat are in harmony is priceless.

One of my favorite memories was taking a long-time San Francisco resident on their first Bay sail. After an amazing day ending at Angel Island, they said, 'This was my best day ever in San Francisco.' It doesn't get better than that. See you on the water!"

Terence Carey

After retiring in late 2022, Terence set out to learn how to sail at Modern Sailing, drawing inspiration from his background as a recreational pilot and years spent admiring boats on the Bay.

To accelerate his learning curve, Terence set a goal to skipper every Gold and Platinum fleet boat in both Sausalito and Berkeley- a feat he completed in late 2024. Having completed ASA 101 through 106, 114, and 118, he is one of the most active members in our crewlist, building skills alongside fellow MSC sailors. "One of my favorite things about sailing in the Bay is gliding peacefully though the water powered by the sails and enjoying some of the best scenery that tourists come from around the world to see - it's a great feeling."

For Terence, the highlight of sailing is bringing people together to plan a great sail, build camaraderie, and enjoy world-class views. As a Club Skipper, he looks forward to helping members build confidence on the Bay as he prepares for bareboat charters in Croatia and the Caribbean.

All of the courses and my instructors (JT and Stan) were extremely professional and full of knowledge and experience. I found I was able to learn from their experiences beyond the scope of the courses, and look forward to future opportunities to do so. I would highly recommend Modern Sailing to anyone.

I love sailing in the San Francisco Bay and greatly appreciate everything that MSC has to offer, the classes, clinics, club sails, racing and charters. I enjoy our supportive sailing community and use every opportunity to spend time on the water. After obtaining the certifications from MSC I did my first charter in Croatia in 2022 with my family. It was amazing and we’re looking forward to returning soon!

  • Emma & George Stubbs, Sausalito

We just took our ASA 106 at a school in Rhode Island as we prepare for 6 months of cruising in the Caribbean. The class was great, but more than anything it made us really appreciate the quality of teaching and rigor at Modern Sailing. Even though we were the newest to sailing, the group seemed to think that we had the best fundamentals. We felt very well prepared and we see why Modern Sailing has the reputation it does.

I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!

  • Andrew Goble, San Francisco

It has been wonderful sailing with MSC over the years. Please extend my thanks to the owners, management, and staff for unrequited professionalism and high standards in a charter fleet. I have sailed with several in my years and none nearly hold a candle to the quality of business and staff at Modern Sailing.
