How to get your IPC Card

IPC card_Easy way to Charter in Mediterranean

Updated August 19, 2026

Planning a Mediterranean charter? American Sailing’s International Proficiency Certificate (IPC) serves as mandatory proof of bareboat charter competency for European and Mediterranean charter companies that require proficiency credentials displayed in a different format than the ASA Log Book. Updated to a durable, compact ID card format, the card features your photograph, holder details, a built-in VHF endorsement, and a QR code on the back for instant overseas verification.

ASA strongly recommends you apply for an IPC if you are chartering in the Mediterranean as well as the inland waterways of Europe and northern Europe.

To qualify, sailors must hold active certifications through ASA 104 Bareboat Cruising. The entire application process can be completed 100% online by uploading a passport-style photo and paying the processing fee. Once issued, your IPC remains valid for 5 years.

Captain Jeff Cathers is really cool. I had such a great time on the Farallones Day Trip. It was actually my very best day of 2020. Thank you so much for coordinating the trip.

I love sailing in the San Francisco Bay and greatly appreciate everything that MSC has to offer, the classes, clinics, club sails, racing and charters. I enjoy our supportive sailing community and use every opportunity to spend time on the water. After obtaining the certifications from MSC I did my first charter in Croatia in 2022 with my family. It was amazing and we’re looking forward to returning soon!

I would like to compliment Stan Lander for his coaching, counseling and teaching Heavy Weather Offshore Sailing. Stan was very accommodating to all of the student's interests and shared his many years of insight on handling the boat in heavy seas. I would certainly recommend Stan and this course to sheltered waters sailors. My confidence in handling a boat of this size was certainly enhanced by the experience.

The Full Moon Sail with Skipper Bob Gutsgell was Ah-Mayzing!! The group dynamic was lovely and the views spectacular. I can't say enough good things about the experience. Thanks so much for the wonderful Club Sails, they are really great.
