Course Enrollment and Cancellation Policies | Modern Sailing

Course Enrollment and Cancellation Policies

In order to ensure that every student receives the best education and most positive experience, we have a few enrollment and cancellation policies that we are asking everyone to follow. These policies apply to anyone enrolling in a course regardless of how they paid or the amount they paid. For example, a client who purchased a Basic Keelboat Sailing Gift Certificate from an auction, is subject to the same policies as someone who paid Modern Sailing full price for the course.

Enrollment Policies

  • Students must meet the prerequisites or complete a challenge.
  • Courses are for adults only - students must be 18 years old to participate. Parents may request a custom course or private lesson for students 16 and 17 years old, however he or she must be enrolled in the course with a parent.
  • To secure a spot in the course, students must pay the tuition in full.
  • Modern Sailing will allow students to enroll in an ASA 103 course prior to the completion of ASA 101. If the student does not pass ASA 101 prior to the first day of the ASA 103 course, no rescheduling fee will be charged.

Course Cancellation Policy

  • If you cancel with greater than 30 days notice from the first day of your course, you will get a full refund.
  • If you cancel 29 - 15 days prior to the first day of your course, you will get a 50% refund.
  • If you cancel 1 - 14 prior to the first day of your course, you are not eligible for a refund.

  • If you cancel 1 - 29 days prior to the first day of class, you are not eligible for a refund.

Course Rescheduling Policy

  • If you need to reschedule your course before your course has begun, you can do so at no additional charge if you provide 30 days notice or greater.
  • If you need to reschedule within 29 - 15 days of the first day of class, you must pay a $295 rescheduling fee.
  • If you need to reschedule within 1 - 14 days of the first day of class, you must pay a $425 rescheduling fee.

  • If you need to reschedule within 30 - 59 days of the first day of class, you must pay a 25% rescheduling fee.
  • If you need to reschedule within 1 - 29 days of the first day of class, you must pay a 35% rescheduling fee.

If a Student is unable to finish a course

  • If a student is unable to finish his or her course once it has begun, they can be a last-minute drop-in to a future course. If they reserve their spot 7 days or less than the course start date, a fee of $225 will apply. If they reserve their spot more than 7 days in advance, a $425 fee will apply.

Low Enrollment Cancellation Policy

  • If the class minimum is not met, the enrolled student(s) will be given the option to reschedule or a full refund. ASA course enrollment cancellations are made 7 days prior to the first day of class.

The Full Moon Sail with Skipper Bob Gutsgell was Ah-Mayzing!! The group dynamic was lovely and the views spectacular. I can't say enough good things about the experience. Thanks so much for the wonderful Club Sails, they are really great.

Here are some snaps of Our Saturday, August 20, 2022 Modern Sailing Expedition with Captain Robert Bivin, who was outstanding. Please convey photos and thanks to him. He is an outstanding individual, leader and sailing instructor. His knowledge and experience made us all feel safe and our Farallones Day Trip educational and just amazing.

All of the courses and my instructors (JT and Stan) were extremely professional and full of knowledge and experience. I found I was able to learn from their experiences beyond the scope of the courses, and look forward to future opportunities to do so. I would highly recommend Modern Sailing to anyone.

I love sailing in the San Francisco Bay and greatly appreciate everything that MSC has to offer, the classes, clinics, club sails, racing and charters. I enjoy our supportive sailing community and use every opportunity to spend time on the water. After obtaining the certifications from MSC I did my first charter in Croatia in 2022 with my family. It was amazing and we’re looking forward to returning soon!

I would like to compliment Stan Lander for his coaching, counseling and teaching Heavy Weather Offshore Sailing. Stan was very accommodating to all of the student's interests and shared his many years of insight on handling the boat in heavy seas. I would certainly recommend Stan and this course to sheltered waters sailors. My confidence in handling a boat of this size was certainly enhanced by the experience.
