ASA 105, Coastal Navigation

6 Evenings, Tues / Weds / Thurs (6:30 - 9:30pm)

The ASA 105, Coastal Navigation workshop offers advanced chart navigation instruction and prepares students to successfully complete the certification exam. With an experienced USCG captain as your instructor, learn and practice chart reading, tidal current determination, dead reckoning, position fixes, running fixes, danger bearings, set and drift calculations, and more.

This course has no prerequisites! This means no matter where you are in your sailing education, you can gain the skills to become a competent navigator.

Your ASA Coastal Navigation Study Guide, which includes a textbook with chapter quizzes and a practice chart, are included with the purchase of your course and will be mailed to you. If you wish to pick up your study materials in person or sign up less than a week from the first day of your course, please contact our office. Hands-on classroom instruction with your ASA certified instructor is intended to supplement the text rather than replace it. Advance study with your textbook and chart practice will enhance your success in this course.

The course is 6 evenings in duration, 3 evenings per week for 2 weeks. You will receive five evenings of classroom lecture and practice with testing on the sixth evening. Please bring your navigation tools: divider, parallel or sliding rulers, white eraser, and magnifying glass or reading glasses.

Here are some snaps of Our Saturday, August 20, 2022 Modern Sailing Expedition with Captain Robert Bivin, who was outstanding. Please convey photos and thanks to him. He is an outstanding individual, leader and sailing instructor. His knowledge and experience made us all feel safe and our Farallones Day Trip educational and just amazing.

I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!

I've taken two classes at MSS&C and was very happy with the program. This is also a great club with lots of opportunities for camaraderie and practice on the water. The boats in the fleet are fantastic and kept in tip-top shape. I highly recommend for all sailors and would-be sailors!

The class was terrific. I know you must get many compliments about your sailing instructors...But I must tell you that Robert is outstanding. Having taught SCUBA, I really appreciate the way he is so sensitive to all on board, dealing with each so well, knowing quickly their strengths and weaknesses making each feel special and cared for.

Captain Jeff Cathers is really cool. I had such a great time on the Farallones Day Trip. It was actually my very best day of 2020. Thank you so much for coordinating the trip.
