Memorial Day Weekend in the Bay Area: Sailing Guide

For those of us at the helm, Memorial Day weekend signals the first three-day hall pass we’ve been waiting for all winter. Before we toss the lines, it’s worth taking a beat to look at the wake we’re leaving behind. Not only is the weekend of May 22 - 25, 2026 a time to enjoy the open freedom of the Bay, it's important we pause to honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their legacy is seen in every sunrise we witness from the deck and every peaceful moment we spend at anchor.

In the spirit of making the most of this gift, here is your guide to navigating the holiday weekend, from member-exclusive charter savings to the best community traditions on the water to make the most of your start to the summer.

Modern Sailing Members - Maximize Your Time: Multi-Day Charter Savings

A single day on the Bay is a reset; three days is a transformation. To help you lean into the long weekend, here is a reminder of consecutive-day discounts for our charters. Whether you're planning a morning departure for a full day adventure, or a slow crawl to a quiet anchorage, the longer you stay out, the more you save:

10% Off: 2-consecutive day charters.

15% Off: 3+ consecutive day charters.

Not a Member? Now until May 24th our Membership Initiation Fee is 50% off (regularly $500, now $250) See our Spring Sailing Specials here.

The Member Toolkit: Add-ons & Resources

A smooth holiday cruise is all in the preparation. We’ve stocked a few essentials to help you navigate the weekend with ease:

Angel Island Docking Passes: Ayala Cove is the place to be, but the docking fees can add up. We have one pass available per location (Sausalito and Berkeley). Request one when you reserve your boat (or call the office) and skip the fee.

Sausalito Shore Access: For those departing from Marina Plaza Harbor, our dinghy and outboard rentals are ready to go. It’s the best way to explore the waterfront or grab a morning coffee without moving the big boat.

Clubhouse Reciprocity: Your membership opens doors at Corinthian (CYC) and Sausalito (SYC) Yacht Clubs. They are fantastic spots to toast the weekend, but be sure to call ahead for their holiday hours and any guest dock or restaurant restrictions.

The North Bay Expedition: Alternative Charter Ideas

Memorial Day is the perfect time to explore the warmer, flatter waters of the North Bay. Get your crew and boat checked out at 9:00 AM to get an early start and you’re perfectly timed to catch the morning flood tide. Skip the heavy swell of the Potato Patch and set your sights on a destination that feels worlds away:

  • Historic Charms of Benicia: With deep-draft friendly slips and a historic downtown, it’s the perfect multi-night getaway.
Pro Tip: Aim to arrive before 2:00 PM. The Carquinez Strait acts as a natural funnel; landing before the afternoon "Benicia Breeze" pipes up makes docking in the narrow fairways significantly easier. View our Benicia Cruising Guide for docking maps and dining highlights like Sailor Jack's and Bella Siena.

  • The Delta's Freshwater: Continue beyond Benicia, past the Carquinez Strait, into fresh water and quiet sloughs. It’s the ultimate change of pace for a three-day weekend. With approachable deep water, for boats with a 5–6 foot draft, the main shipping channels toward Pittsburg and Rio Vista remain the safest and most reliable route. These channels are well-marked and offer plenty of depth, even for our larger vessels.
Owl Harbor Marina (near Isleton) remains a top-rated destination in 2026. It is famously "sailor-friendly," deep-draft accessible (aim for 7' at the entrance), and offers a serene, park-like setting that feels worlds away from the city. Check for availabilty now - the holiday weekend may be booking early.

Community Events - Full Day or Overnight Charters in the Bay

Master Mariners Regatta (May 23): For a dose of pure maritime history, keep your eyes on the Central Bay on Saturday, May 23. The Master Mariners Regatta will be in full swing. There is nothing quite like the sight of the classic wooden fleet leaning into a stiff breeze, it’s a living tribute to the traditions we carry forward. Details here.

Presidio Commemoration (May 25): San Francisco’s largest Memorial Day ceremony at the National Cemetery. Learn more online.

USS Hornet (Alameda): Visit the historic carrier for their annual holiday tribute and wreath-laying. Visit the website for information.

If your plans bring you back to the dock, the Bay Area is wide open with ways to honor the day. You might find yourself soaking up the vibrant energy of Carnaval in the Mission. For a full rundown of local festivities and holiday ceremonies, check out this Bay Area guide.

Fair winds and a meaningful holiday to you all. We’ll see you on the water!

Thumbs up to (Club Skipper) Geoff (Love) and his wife Laura. I went on my first Club Sail on Sunday, January 18, 2026. They were terrific!

  • John Clark

Every aspect of Modern Sailing - training, syllabus, course materials, quality of the boats, quality of the instructors, and the very friendly and helpful staff - exceeded my expectations. Modern Sailing has a first class sailing program in an environment with challenging winds and currents. I look forward to coming back to charter a boat and certainly plan to continue my sailing training.

  • Steve Hood, Basic Coastal Cruising

I would definitely recommend Modern Sailing to anyone who is interested in learning to sail the right way.

  • Ray Arceneaux

The vessel was clean and in fine condition - very nice boat for training, well-equipped.

  • Danny Collins

The office staff was very accommodating in meeting my availability.
