History Made - Our First ASA 108 in a Decade!

Ever wonder what it's like to sail 100 miles offshore on the Pacific Ocean down the California Coast? You can take a peek into the offshore sailing world and its sunrises, sunsets, and scenery with these photos and video clips from our October 2023 ASA 108 course.

Coho II and crew's pre-dawn departure on Sunday, October 15 was the momentous start of the first ASA 108 passage we've made in ten years. Soon after our June announcement of this offering, both the southward and northward sessions rapidly sold out and even built up long waitlists! We're looking forward to running this course again for our eager students in 2024.

Our ASA 108, Offshore Passagemaking course traverses open ocean waters between Sausalito and Marina Del Rey and includes a rest and recreation stopover at Catalina Island.

Our big thanks to ASA 108 student Martin W. for capturing and sharing the amazing images we used to create this short video!

Student Elizabeth H. celebrated her birthday on the southward journey - and we all received a gift from her with this beautiful Instagram reel she created!

I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!

The class was terrific. I know you must get many compliments about your sailing instructors...But I must tell you that Robert is outstanding. Having taught SCUBA, I really appreciate the way he is so sensitive to all on board, dealing with each so well, knowing quickly their strengths and weaknesses making each feel special and cared for.

I would like to compliment Stan Lander for his coaching, counseling and teaching Heavy Weather Offshore Sailing. Stan was very accommodating to all of the student's interests and shared his many years of insight on handling the boat in heavy seas. I would certainly recommend Stan and this course to sheltered waters sailors. My confidence in handling a boat of this size was certainly enhanced by the experience.

I took ASA 101 with them recently. They have the best customer service I've ever seen! I mistyped my address when I signed up online so didn't receive the textbook. I called and the lady immediately sent me another copy! Everyone at the club is super friendly.

Captain Jeff Cathers is really cool. I had such a great time on the Farallones Day Trip. It was actually my very best day of 2020. Thank you so much for coordinating the trip.
