Paolo Juvara | Modern Sailing

Paolo Juvara

Race Coach

Paolo discovered his passion for sailing at a young age, learning to sail Optimists (a single-handed dinghy) on Italy’s Lago Maggiore. After a long break from the sport, he returned to sailing in 2016, training first at OCSC and then at Modern Sailing. There, he earned both US Sailing and ASA certifications and spent countless days exploring San Francisco Bay aboard much of the Modern Sailing fleet.

Beyond the Bay Area, Paolo has sailed extensively in international cruising destinations, including St. Lucia and the Grenadines, Greece, Croatia, French Polynesia, Sardinia, Sicily, Belize, and the British Virgin Islands.

In 2022, Paolo discovered sailboat racing through the Berkeley Yacht Club Beercan Races with Modern Sailing. Quickly bitten by the racing bug, he purchased his first boat—a J/105 named Chao Pescao—which is now part of the Modern Sailing Sausalito fleet and actively supports the club’s racing program. An avid competitor, Paolo has participated in over 200 races in the past four years and is highly active in the Bay Area J/105 fleet.

Paolo earned his ASA Instructor credentials and U.S. Coast Guard Captain’s License in 2023 and began teaching at Modern Sailing the following year.

The class was terrific. I know you must get many compliments about your sailing instructors...But I must tell you that Robert is outstanding. Having taught SCUBA, I really appreciate the way he is so sensitive to all on board, dealing with each so well, knowing quickly their strengths and weaknesses making each feel special and cared for.

Captain Jeff Cathers is really cool. I had such a great time on the Farallones Day Trip. It was actually my very best day of 2020. Thank you so much for coordinating the trip.

  • Ray Arceneaux

The vessel was clean and in fine condition - very nice boat for training, well-equipped.

I would like to compliment Stan Lander for his coaching, counseling and teaching Heavy Weather Offshore Sailing. Stan was very accommodating to all of the student's interests and shared his many years of insight on handling the boat in heavy seas. I would certainly recommend Stan and this course to sheltered waters sailors. My confidence in handling a boat of this size was certainly enhanced by the experience.

We just took our ASA 106 at a school in Rhode Island as we prepare for 6 months of cruising in the Caribbean. The class was great, but more than anything it made us really appreciate the quality of teaching and rigor at Modern Sailing. Even though we were the newest to sailing, the group seemed to think that we had the best fundamentals. We felt very well prepared and we see why Modern Sailing has the reputation it does.
