Down and Up the Coast - Southbound ASA 108 and Northbound Delivery Recap

In our recent ASA 108, Offshore Passagemaking course aboard Coho II, students embarked on an unforgettable journey from San Francisco to Marina del Rey, showcasing the beauty and challenges of coastal navigation. The trip began with a spirited departure from the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, where students immediately engaged in hands-on sailing, learning to manage the boat and work as a cohesive crew under the guidance of Captain Jeff Cathers and First Mate Captain Kira Maxiner.

One of the highlights of our voyage was our night anchorage at San Miguel Island, part of the Channel Islands National Park. While we didn’t go ashore, this stunning location provided a unique opportunity for students to experience the tranquility of the open water and practice their anchoring techniques under the stars.

After leaving San Miguel, we continued our journey toward Catalina Island, where we spent one day at anchor in Two Harbors and two days in Avalon. Catalina’s vibrant marine environment served as the perfect backdrop for enhancing our sailing skills.

Students participated in various activities, including navigation exercises, sail trimming, and hands-on training in sailboat handling, all critical components of the ASA 108 curriculum. Evenings were filled with group discussions and reflections on the day’s lessons and enjoying the camaraderie of a shared passion for sailing.

Throughout the trip, students experienced the challenges of offshore sailing while gaining confidence and knowledge in their abilities. This adventure not only equipped them with practical skills but also created lasting memories and friendships among the crew. Overall, the ASA 108 Offshore Passage Making Class was an incredible blend of education, exploration, and teamwork, reinforcing the joys of sailing along the breathtaking California coastline.

Northbound Delivery

The delivery trip from Marina del Rey to San Francisco Bay was both challenging and rewarding. We made swift progress motoring up the coast until we encountered headwinds and large seas off Monterey Bay. This forced us to stop in Santa Cruz for fuel before attempting to push past Davenport. However, strong winds drove us back into the Santa Cruz anchorage for the night.

Undeterred, we set off again at 5:30 a.m. the next morning, determined to reach our destination. With more favorable conditions, we made steady progress and successfully navigated the final leg, ultimately arriving in Sausalito at 8 p.m. on day four. The trip tested our ability to adapt to changing conditions, manage fuel and resources, and make key navigational decisions. It was a valuable experience in offshore and coastal sailing, providing important lessons in resilience and teamwork.

We just took our ASA 106 at a school in Rhode Island as we prepare for 6 months of cruising in the Caribbean. The class was great, but more than anything it made us really appreciate the quality of teaching and rigor at Modern Sailing. Even though we were the newest to sailing, the group seemed to think that we had the best fundamentals. We felt very well prepared and we see why Modern Sailing has the reputation it does.

I would like to compliment Stan Lander for his coaching, counseling and teaching Heavy Weather Offshore Sailing. Stan was very accommodating to all of the student's interests and shared his many years of insight on handling the boat in heavy seas. I would certainly recommend Stan and this course to sheltered waters sailors. My confidence in handling a boat of this size was certainly enhanced by the experience.

The meeting room was quite adequate and the location most convenient, but the course outline and instruction were outstanding. Modern Sailing is fortunate to have such a well organized instructor in Mr. Stan Lander who teaches very well from a rich professional background. Mr. Lander was generous with his time and patiently in helping students who needed more attention or time in understanding various aspects of the curriculum.

The office staff was very accommodating in meeting my availability.

  • Ray Arceneaux

The vessel was clean and in fine condition - very nice boat for training, well-equipped.
