Fly

Premium Sportboat Fleet
J/88

Looking for a rewarding performance experience in a sailboat that also passes the family and friends sailing test? Meet Fly, a 29-foot J/88 Speedster and the first of our Premium Sportboat Fleet. Fast, fun, stable, and featuring a secure cockpit, inboard diesel engine, and overnighting interior, the J/88 delivers all the exhilaration of performance sailing along with some basic cruising comforts to expand your range and possible itineraries.

The J/88 is responsive to steering and trim and is easy to handle. The traditional mainsail and furling jib can be deployed in minutes, all lines lead aft to the cockpit, and the primary winches are within reach of the helm. A deck-stepped carbon fiber mast, a 6.5-foot fixed lead bulb keel, and balanced, efficient hull form optimize a smooth ride and provide exceptional stability and control, even in challenging conditions. In light breezes, the J/88's low drag and high aspect sail plan supply the efficiency and power to sail on when others will have to motor.

Below deck, the J/88 features a simple but functional layout with cabin lighting, two full-length settee berths, a private head, and comfortable seating for four. Along with a navigation station, mini-galley, and a large cooler near the companionway, these features expand your options to include longer day sails, overnights, and weekends. For day sails, her crew comfort capacity is 6.

I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!

I would like to compliment Stan Lander for his coaching, counseling and teaching Heavy Weather Offshore Sailing. Stan was very accommodating to all of the student's interests and shared his many years of insight on handling the boat in heavy seas. I would certainly recommend Stan and this course to sheltered waters sailors. My confidence in handling a boat of this size was certainly enhanced by the experience.

Every aspect of Modern Sailing - training, syllabus, course materials, quality of the boats, quality of the instructors, and the very friendly and helpful staff - exceeded my expectations. Modern Sailing has a first class sailing program in an environment with challenging winds and currents. I look forward to coming back to charter a boat and certainly plan to continue my sailing training.

We just took our ASA 106 at a school in Rhode Island as we prepare for 6 months of cruising in the Caribbean. The class was great, but more than anything it made us really appreciate the quality of teaching and rigor at Modern Sailing. Even though we were the newest to sailing, the group seemed to think that we had the best fundamentals. We felt very well prepared and we see why Modern Sailing has the reputation it does.

Captain Jeff Cathers is really cool. I had such a great time on the Farallones Day Trip. It was actually my very best day of 2020. Thank you so much for coordinating the trip.
