Modern Sailing Berkeley's First ASA 104 on "Moon Dance"

This June 23 to 25, Captain Steve Matles and students Andrew, Jeff, and Maxine (also an office team member) made Modern Sailing history as the crew of Berkeley's first ASA 104, Bareboat Cruising course. In the process, students and instructor got to enjoy a taste of the bareboat lifestyle aboard a fantastic cruising boat! The course was conducted aboard  Moon Dance, a Bavaria 42 new to Berkeley's Platinum Fleet.

Moon Dance will be used for future ASA 104 and Platinum clinics in Berkeley and occasionally for Pacific Coast courses and expeditions. She is also currently available for Platinum and Berkeley Site Rated members to bareboat charter.

As part of the ASA 104 curriculum, students create a meal plan and provision for the weekend's needs together.

After the Safeway expedition, the dock cart is loaded up to haul provisions to the boat.

Student Jeff used some of those provisions to make breakfast for the crew. During ASA 104, students typically share galley duties - unless you're lucky enough to have a zealous chef aboard!

Crew reap the hearty rewards of Jeff's labors together in the cockpit.

For the dock-and-dine experience, the crew chose the iconic Scott's Seafood Grill and Bar in the Oakland Estuary. During ASA 104, at least one meal is enjoyed ashore.

We don't want to give you the impression that it was all about the food. Students also learned new skills and received plenty of hands-on practice under the guidance of Captain Matles.

They enjoyed their time on the water too!

Not everyone's favorite skill to learn, but a necessary one. What goes in must come out!

The meeting room was quite adequate and the location most convenient, but the course outline and instruction were outstanding. Modern Sailing is fortunate to have such a well organized instructor in Mr. Stan Lander who teaches very well from a rich professional background. Mr. Lander was generous with his time and patiently in helping students who needed more attention or time in understanding various aspects of the curriculum.

Captain Jeff Cathers is really cool. I had such a great time on the Farallones Day Trip. It was actually my very best day of 2020. Thank you so much for coordinating the trip.

All of the courses and my instructors (JT and Stan) were extremely professional and full of knowledge and experience. I found I was able to learn from their experiences beyond the scope of the courses, and look forward to future opportunities to do so. I would highly recommend Modern Sailing to anyone.

Here are some snaps of Our Saturday, August 20, 2022 Modern Sailing Expedition with Captain Robert Bivin, who was outstanding. Please convey photos and thanks to him. He is an outstanding individual, leader and sailing instructor. His knowledge and experience made us all feel safe and our Farallones Day Trip educational and just amazing.

I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!
