Clinic Information

The ASA 207 IQC is the sixth instructor-level clinic in the keelboat training system and certifies an individual for teaching the ASA 107, Celestial Navigation course at an ASA affiliate school.  ASA Instructor Certification Standards parallel those required for students, but at a much higher level with emphasis on teaching. Certification requires the Instructor Candidate to pass written and oral examinations and to pass a practical plotting evaluation by a certified ASA Instructor Evaluator. There are three areas of competence that must be demonstrated by the IC to achieve the ASA 207 Instructor certification

  1. a working knowledge of the Nautical Almanac, HO 229 and HO 249 sight reduction tables, the Star Finder (2102-D), ability to plot estimated positions and celestial fixes on standard plotting sheets;
  2. a practical ability to identify stars, use the sextant, and obtain a celestial fix for a current date (in real time);
  3. an understanding of the celestial navigation that leaves the Instructor Evaluator with little doubt that the Instructor Candidate can effectively teach the subject matter.

When the Candidate successfully demonstrates these abilities, the Instructor Evaluator signs the Candidate's log book and the ASA issues the certification stickers by mail.

Clinic Price: $545

    I love sailing in the San Francisco Bay and greatly appreciate everything that MSC has to offer, the classes, clinics, club sails, racing and charters. I enjoy our supportive sailing community and use every opportunity to spend time on the water. After obtaining the certifications from MSC I did my first charter in Croatia in 2022 with my family. It was amazing and we’re looking forward to returning soon!

    Captain Jeff Cathers is really cool. I had such a great time on the Farallones Day Trip. It was actually my very best day of 2020. Thank you so much for coordinating the trip.

    I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!

    All of the courses and my instructors (JT and Stan) were extremely professional and full of knowledge and experience. I found I was able to learn from their experiences beyond the scope of the courses, and look forward to future opportunities to do so. I would highly recommend Modern Sailing to anyone.

    The meeting room was quite adequate and the location most convenient, but the course outline and instruction were outstanding. Modern Sailing is fortunate to have such a well organized instructor in Mr. Stan Lander who teaches very well from a rich professional background. Mr. Lander was generous with his time and patiently in helping students who needed more attention or time in understanding various aspects of the curriculum.
