ASA 106, Advanced Coastal Cruising - Caribbean Adventure with "Wild Rumpus" | Modern Sailing

ASA 106, Advanced Coastal Cruising - Caribbean Adventure with "Wild Rumpus"

Join Modern Sailing this April 1-8 aboard the luxury catamaran Wild Rumpus for an adventure of a lifetime! Sail over 200 nautical miles, stand night watch, prepare meals in a rolling galley, and explore one of the most beautiful and iconic sailing venues in the world, all while earning your ASA 106, Advanced Coastal Cruising certification. Sailing among the Virgin Islands over the same waters and routes once traversed by real pirates of the Caribbean, this adventure learning experience will impart you with the skills and confidence to safely lead your own coastal and island-hopping plunders.

Subject to the weather and changing immigration policies, the itinerary will take you from St. Thomas, USVI to numerous islands, including St. John, St. Croix, and Anguilla. You'll practice night sailing, chart navigation, electronic piloting, watch standing, and mooring/anchoring. Learn float plan development, research of remote locations (including their immigration and customs policies), offshore communications, offshore sail trim, weather analysis, heavy weather techniques, emergency procedures, and more. Boat systems and troubleshooting are also covered, with an emphasis on the problem-solving skills that are essential to self-sufficient coastal cruising. During downtime, you'll also have the opportunity to explore some of the rich natural treasures, relaxing activities, and iconic attractions available on these islands.

The Advanced Cruising & Seamanship textbook is included with your purchase of this course and will be mailed to you. If you wish to pick up your textbook in person or if you sign up less than a week from the first day of your course, please contact our office. Optionally, you may purchase the Advanced Cruising & Seamanship e-book directly from the ASA. Advance study of your textbook will enhance your success in this course. The Annapolis Book of Seamanship by John Rousmaniere is also recommended reading but is not required.

This course is taught aboard a 50' catamaran, so ASA 114, Cruising Catamaran is a prerequisite.

Testimonials

  • Steve Hood, Basic Coastal Cruising

I would definitely recommend Modern Sailing to anyone who is interested in learning to sail the right way.

  • Warren Leiden, Member

I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!

  • Rolf Zingg

Since many, many years, I had the dream to sail underneath the Golden Gate bridge. On October 14th last year, my dream became true. Thanks to our dear friend Aaron Fritz who made it possible and organized this cruise for us. With this adventure I was able to achieve one more milestone on my sailing career.

Finally on the water, it was great! Full moon made the flows even stronger and it was like sailing in a washing machine.

I did my sailing education in the English Channel, where the situation with the wind and flows is comparable to the San Francisco Bay. So I felt pretty much "at home" being on the helm in the Bay.

I hope our skipper Stan Lander enjoyed this day cruise too. We, definitely did! It was an unforgettable experience for all of us.

A very big thank you to all of you who made it possible, that my dream became reality! Also thank you for the MSC flag I got at the end of the day. It found it's place in my study, where I can see it daily.
