Coho II Coastal Delivery Experience | Modern Sailing

Coho II Coastal Delivery Experience

August 17 - 23, 2025* and October 6 - 9, 2025*

Marina del Rey to Sausalito

We’re looking for motivated and skilled crew members to join us on a coastal upwind delivery of our Spencer 1330 Coho II from Marina del Rey, CA, to Sausalito, CA, scheduled* from August 17th through the 23rd, and October 6th - 9th. These passages will require teamwork, endurance, and a basic understanding of coastal navigation. *While we'll do our best to stick to this proposed schedule, safety is always our priority. The delivery could be delayed due to adverse weather conditions. The weather this time of year is generally favorable, but strong headwinds and complex coastal currents are a possibility.

The route covers some of California’s most scenic and challenging waters, including the potential for strong headwinds and complex coastal currents. We will be motor-sailing through both day and night, requiring all crew members to participate in rotating watches.

Experience with night sailing, sail trimming, and handling a variety of weather conditions will be highly beneficial. The weather conditions this time of year are generally favorable, however if serious adverse conditions are present, the delivery could be delayed.

You will be responsible for your own transportation to Marina del Rey. As a crew member, you’ll be expected to contribute to all aspects of the voyage, including helming, sail changes, navigation, and meal preparation. A positive attitude, good communication skills, and the ability to work well under pressure are essential. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in coastal delivery while enjoying the camaraderie of a dedicated crew.

If you're ready for a rewarding challenge and have a passion for sailing, we'd love to have you on board for this adventure. Visit the article, Down and Up the Coast - Southbound ASA 108 and Northbound Delivery Recap from 2024 by Mary Elkins.

We just took our ASA 106 at a school in Rhode Island as we prepare for 6 months of cruising in the Caribbean. The class was great, but more than anything it made us really appreciate the quality of teaching and rigor at Modern Sailing. Even though we were the newest to sailing, the group seemed to think that we had the best fundamentals. We felt very well prepared and we see why Modern Sailing has the reputation it does.

I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!

Thumbs up to (Club Skipper) Geoff (Love) and his wife Laura. I went on my first Club Sail on Sunday, January 18, 2026. They were terrific!

Here are some snaps of Our Saturday, August 20, 2022 Modern Sailing Expedition with Captain Robert Bivin, who was outstanding. Please convey photos and thanks to him. He is an outstanding individual, leader and sailing instructor. His knowledge and experience made us all feel safe and our Farallones Day Trip educational and just amazing.

Captain Jeff Cathers is really cool. I had such a great time on the Farallones Day Trip. It was actually my very best day of 2020. Thank you so much for coordinating the trip.
