Robert Bivin

ASA Master Instructor

Robert's fast-paced journey with Modern Sailing is a testament to his passion for sailing, particularly for sharing this passion with others. He joined Modern as an ASA 101 certified student in 2016 and quickly progressed through all of our available ASA courses. He also graduated from the Racing Clinic, Club Skipper Clinic, and several other advanced Sailing Clinics. In 2017, Robert became one of our most active Club Skippers, adding to his experience by leading countless Club Sails.

Robert didn't stop there! His remarkable progress continued with completing his USCG Captains License Courses and ASA Instructor Qualification Clinics at Modern Sailing in 2018 and 2019. Upon becoming an instructor for Modern Sailing, he dove right into teaching ASA courses and Sailing Clinics, leading our Farallones Day Trips, Advanced Coastal Cruising and Offshore Passagemaking courses, and even some Global Destinations Flotillas.

As of 2024, Modern Sailing is extremely proud to have Robert as a certified ASA Master Instructor. This means he has become a leader of our Instructor Qualification Clinics and is certifying sailors to become instructors themselves.

Robert's journey is a shining example of dedication, skill, and the joy of teaching. His contributions continue to inspire both new and seasoned sailors, fostering a vibrant and knowledgeable sailing community at Modern Sailing. We look forward to seeing his future accomplishments and the many students and instructors he will undoubtedly inspire along the way.

I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!

I started sailing at Modern at the end of 2021 and threw myself into it, spending as much time out on the water as I could. I came to Modern with some flat water dinghy sailing experience and it was quite a transition learning to sail bigger boats in much tougher conditions. There was a lot to learn, but the Modern instructors, Club Skippers and fellow Modern sailors made learning fun and rewarding. My Modern instructors were clearly very experienced sailors and sailing with them was inspiring! I want to thank the maintenance crew and office staff for their dedication and hard work - you are the folks who make things work! There is a lot more to learn and I look forward to sailing with Modern for years to come.

I love sailing in the San Francisco Bay and greatly appreciate everything that MSC has to offer, the classes, clinics, club sails, racing and charters. I enjoy our supportive sailing community and use every opportunity to spend time on the water. After obtaining the certifications from MSC I did my first charter in Croatia in 2022 with my family. It was amazing and we’re looking forward to returning soon!
