Bill Moreland | Modern Sailing

Bill Moreland

Chief Operations Officer / General Manager

Bill started sailing in San Francisco Bay over 30 years ago while working in the supply chain business. He wanted to have something to take his mind off work, so he took sailing lessons in Santa Cruz and was immediately hooked.

Over the years, Bill was active in the sailing community from racing on the Bay to being a Founding Member and first Commodore of a local yacht club. He moved from San Francisco to the British Virgin Islands, back to San Francisco, to Washington state to Massachusetts, and, finally back to the Bay area - enjoying sailing in each location.

In 2006, Bill came to Modern Sailing to earn his U.S. Coast Guard OUPV License, followed with a 100 Ton Master’s License. In 2008, he decided to turn his passion for sailing into a new career – first as a Captain on sailboats doing tours on the Bay and finally becoming an ASA Certified Sailing Instructor. Bill oversees day-to-day operations at Modern Sailing and also enjoys helping students reach their sailing goals by teaching ASA courses, ASA Instructor Qualification Clinics, and US Coast Guard Captains License Courses.

Testimonials

  • Steve Hood, Basic Coastal Cruising

I would definitely recommend Modern Sailing to anyone who is interested in learning to sail the right way.

  • John Kipping

The meeting room was quite adequate and the location most convenient, but the course outline and instruction were outstanding. Modern Sailing is fortunate to have such a well organized instructor in Mr. Stan Lander who teaches very well from a rich professional background. Mr. Lander was generous with his time and patiently in helping students who needed more attention or time in understanding various aspects of the curriculum.

  • John Clark

Every aspect of Modern Sailing - training, syllabus, course materials, quality of the boats, quality of the instructors, and the very friendly and helpful staff - exceeded my expectations. Modern Sailing has a first class sailing program in an environment with challenging winds and currents. I look forward to coming back to charter a boat and certainly plan to continue my sailing training.
