Berkeley Catamaran Orientation | Modern Sailing

Berkeley Catamaran Orientation

Meet Folie à Deux, the newest boat in Modern Sailing’s expanding fleet, and a beautiful cruising catamaran. As with many popular French-built catamarans, she offers a few motoring and sailing characteristics that differ from monohull sailboats. This 3.5-hour clinic will prepare you to skipper Folie à Deux, with specific tips for docking, undocking, and entering and exiting the Berkeley Marina.

The clinic curriculum includes:

  • Orientation in Berkeley marina procedures
  • Docking and maneuvering using twin engines and spring lines
  • Rudder and steering characteristics
  • Running rigging particulars
  • How and when to reef
  • Anchoring and ground tackle
  • Boat systems orientation

This clinic is designed for Modern Sailing club members who possess an ASA 114, Cruising Catamaran certification or Catamaran Fleet Rating. The fun, knowledge and skills gained include hands-on docking and sailing, onboard systems orientation, and training under the guidance of a US Coast Guard licensed and American Sailing Association certified instructor. Each course has a maximum of 4 students.

The Cruising Catamaran Made Easy textbook for the ASA 114, Cruising Catamaran course is highly recommended reading before this clinic. Reviewing parts of the textbook will enhance your enjoyment of the clinic activities. The book is available directly from the ASA.

Upon successful completion of the Folie à Deux orientation sail, Modern Sailing club members are encouraged to charter this vessel.

The fee for this orientation clinic will be deducted from the cost of the member's next catamaran charter.

The class was terrific. I know you must get many compliments about your sailing instructors...But I must tell you that Robert is outstanding. Having taught SCUBA, I really appreciate the way he is so sensitive to all on board, dealing with each so well, knowing quickly their strengths and weaknesses making each feel special and cared for.

The vessel was clean and in fine condition - very nice boat for training, well-equipped.

I would like to compliment Stan Lander for his coaching, counseling and teaching Heavy Weather Offshore Sailing. Stan was very accommodating to all of the student's interests and shared his many years of insight on handling the boat in heavy seas. I would certainly recommend Stan and this course to sheltered waters sailors. My confidence in handling a boat of this size was certainly enhanced by the experience.

I've taken two classes at MSS&C and was very happy with the program. This is also a great club with lots of opportunities for camaraderie and practice on the water. The boats in the fleet are fantastic and kept in tip-top shape. I highly recommend for all sailors and would-be sailors!
