Electronic Piloting and Radar Clinic | Modern Sailing

Electronic Piloting and Radar Clinic

One Day, 9am - 3:30pm

Whether your goal is to advance skills learned in ASA 104, build confidence as a bareboat skipper, or prepare for the ASA 105/106 course, this one-day clinic will bring you into the 21st century and prepare you for proficiency on common electronic navigation systems. While ASA courses prepare you for basic navigation, becoming proficient in the electronic navigation tools found on your boat allows you to plan your trip and chart your course with ease.

Taught aboard one of our Gold or Platinum Fleet vessels, you will be guided through some of the most common electronic piloting systems found aboard 30' to 50' sailing vessels, with the opportunity to practice these skills in real-time on the Bay.

Receive hands-on training with GPS plotters, radar, automatic vessel identification, piloting assist, collision avoidance decision-making aids, depth sounders, and distress signaling devices. You can complete this one-day clinic ready to plot a new course and pilot in a variety of visibility conditions.

There are three ways to sign up for this course - by phone (415) 331-8250, email, or by clicking the link below.

The meeting room was quite adequate and the location most convenient, but the course outline and instruction were outstanding. Modern Sailing is fortunate to have such a well organized instructor in Mr. Stan Lander who teaches very well from a rich professional background. Mr. Lander was generous with his time and patiently in helping students who needed more attention or time in understanding various aspects of the curriculum.

Every aspect of Modern Sailing - training, syllabus, course materials, quality of the boats, quality of the instructors, and the very friendly and helpful staff - exceeded my expectations. Modern Sailing has a first class sailing program in an environment with challenging winds and currents. I look forward to coming back to charter a boat and certainly plan to continue my sailing training.

Here are some snaps of Our Saturday, August 20, 2022 Modern Sailing Expedition with Captain Robert Bivin, who was outstanding. Please convey photos and thanks to him. He is an outstanding individual, leader and sailing instructor. His knowledge and experience made us all feel safe and our Farallones Day Trip educational and just amazing.

We just took our ASA 106 at a school in Rhode Island as we prepare for 6 months of cruising in the Caribbean. The class was great, but more than anything it made us really appreciate the quality of teaching and rigor at Modern Sailing. Even though we were the newest to sailing, the group seemed to think that we had the best fundamentals. We felt very well prepared and we see why Modern Sailing has the reputation it does.

I would like to compliment Stan Lander for his coaching, counseling and teaching Heavy Weather Offshore Sailing. Stan was very accommodating to all of the student's interests and shared his many years of insight on handling the boat in heavy seas. I would certainly recommend Stan and this course to sheltered waters sailors. My confidence in handling a boat of this size was certainly enhanced by the experience.
