US Coast Guard Courses for Captain's License

Get your Coast Guard Captain's License!

Save yourself months of preparation time by letting Modern Sailing School & Club lead you through the USCG Captain's licensing process. We are a Coast Guard-approved training facility, which means we can administer the licensing exam, saving you the hassle and red tape of dealing with a regional exam center.

This course is taught by Retired Lt. Commander Stan Lander. During his Coast Guard career, Stan was assigned to ships and duty stations in some of the world's most highly traveled cruising areas, including the Chesapeake Bay, Puerto Rico, and Miami, Florida. While serving on the USCG Cutters Morganthau and Northland, he engaged in both rescue and maritime law enforcement actions in the Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, Eastern Pacific, NW Atlantic, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.

License Information and Requirements

OUPV License - The Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel (also known as the Six Pack License) course prepares you to meet the qualification requirements for a USCG OUPV License. The OUPV License allows you to take up to 6 passengers for hire on an uninspected vessel.

Masters' 50 or 100 Ton License - The 100 Ton Master's USCG License course prepares you to meet the qualification requirements for a US Coast Guard Masters License in near coastal waters. The Master's License is awarded in 3 different tonnage categories: 25, 50 and 100 tons. The 100 ton license will allow you to operate commercial inspected vessels.

Coast Guard License Requirements - After you take the course and sit the exam, you have one year to complete all your requirements - sea service and personal. I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!

The Full Moon Sail with Skipper Bob Gutsgell was Ah-Mayzing!! The group dynamic was lovely and the views spectacular. I can't say enough good things about the experience. Thanks so much for the wonderful Club Sails, they are really great.

I started sailing at Modern at the end of 2021 and threw myself into it, spending as much time out on the water as I could. I came to Modern with some flat water dinghy sailing experience and it was quite a transition learning to sail bigger boats in much tougher conditions. There was a lot to learn, but the Modern instructors, Club Skippers and fellow Modern sailors made learning fun and rewarding. My Modern instructors were clearly very experienced sailors and sailing with them was inspiring! I want to thank the maintenance crew and office staff for their dedication and hard work - you are the folks who make things work! There is a lot more to learn and I look forward to sailing with Modern for years to come.
