J/24 Racing Skipper Clinic

Want to learn to skipper a race boat? The Berkeley J/24 Racing Skipper Clinic is a great way to get introduced to racing or to refresh your skills!

The day will begin with a short classroom and dockside discussion on Sail Trim, Boat-handling, and the Basic Racing Rules. We will then get out on the water and practice racing drills to get comfortable with maneuvers and starts.

After these drills we will run a minimum of 3 short races. A Race Coach will act as race committee and will coach from on the water in a support boat. After the on the water session, we will do a race debrief back at Inspire with Après-sail beverages and snacks.

There is an option to “Buy the Boat” and pick your own crew or enroll in one of 3 spots on the boat.  Each crew member will rotate as skipper of the boat throughout the day.

The J/24 Racing Skipper Clinic will be sailed by jib and mainsail only with a skipper and 2 crew to allow students to lay a great foundation in racing. Race days will run once a month November to February.

Cost for Members:
Single Seat $175 or "Buy the Boat" $400
Sportboat Fleet Rating with a minimum of 3 on-the-water days as skipper of record on a sportboat charter; or, sailing resume demonstrating equivalent experience.

I love sailing in the San Francisco Bay and greatly appreciate everything that MSC has to offer, the classes, clinics, club sails, racing and charters. I enjoy our supportive sailing community and use every opportunity to spend time on the water. After obtaining the certifications from MSC I did my first charter in Croatia in 2022 with my family. It was amazing and we’re looking forward to returning soon!

I took ASA 101 with them recently. They have the best customer service I've ever seen! I mistyped my address when I signed up online so didn't receive the textbook. I called and the lady immediately sent me another copy! Everyone at the club is super friendly.

I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!
