"Birth of a Sailsman" by Ole Tennant
(Article from Men's Health Magazine - Jul 1995)

To the man used to locomoting on terra firma, piloting a sailboat is like entering another dimension. Nothing he's learned about how to make things go and stop and turn on solid ground works on water. But all that can change in a matter of days at a good sailing school, where you'll learn not only how to be the skipper of a boat, but also how to talk like one, rattling off terms like heel, jib, port and leeward.

In a typical beginner course, instructors will teach you basic maneuvers such as pulling away from the dock, tacking (that is, zigzagging upwind) and jibing (zigzagging down-wind). In two days, you'll be able to steer a sailboat competently; in five you should be certified to take out a day sailer on your own. Here are some of the best sailing schools in the nation.

Modern Sailing Academy, Sausalito, California, (800) 995-1668. This two-day beginner course is aboard a 3Z-foot sloop on windy San Francisco Bay, To be certified as a skipper, take the five-day program, which can also be scheduled over three weekends. Cost: $Z65 for two days; $695 for five.
